Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

The jazz performer Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born on the 20th of February 1937 in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio. Her parents were ironworker Olden Wilson and his wife Lillian Ryan who worked as domestic helper. Nancy Wilson was the youngest baby of six. Nancy was greatly influenced as a girl by the music her dad played and loved at her home. At the age of four, Nancy was aware that she would like to become an accomplished musician. She discovered her talent for music through singing in choirs at church. After winning a talent competition in a television show around the age of 15, she started appearing regularly in Skyline Melodies, while still in high school. In the nightclubs she started singing at the age of 15. Nancy was kicked out of Central State University in Ohio after matriculating for an entire year. In 1956 she made her debut album in Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. They performed together from 1956 through 1958. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made when she was a member of the Big Band of Carolyn Club. Cannonball suggested that she move into New York and go to The Big Town to continue her professional career. After just a few days the manager of Adderley heard her singing and hired her. The contract was signed with Capitol Records in 1960. That year, she debuted with the song. Guess who I saw today? Capitol published five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Adderley encouraged her to shift away from R&B in favor of jazz and torch song. The 1962 group collaboration of Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley led her to fame and her breakthrough song Tell Me the Truth in 1963. Her first job was in New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's premier nightclub.
