Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson, a jazz musician and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Chillicothe, Ohio 20 February 1937, to Olden Wilson, an ironworker who had worked for a long period as housekeeper. Nancy was the first of six children. Nancy was a child who listened to the records of her father and his love for music. Nancy knew that she was going to become a performer by the time she was 4 years old. She developed her talent by singing in the church choir. In her early teens when she was 15, she got a spot on an audition on television and started appearing regularly in The Skyline Melodies Tv Show while being in High School. The nightclubs where she was a regular performer, she began working at age 15. Nancy, then 17, graduated from high-school and matriculated in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for an entire year prior to deciding to pursue a career as a musician. She recorded her first record in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. The group toured from 1956 to 1958. Nancy made her debut album via Dot Records during the time she spent in this band. Cannonball Aderley suggested she make the move in New York so as to enhance her career. In 1959 Nancy made the move to The Big Town. She was commissioned to perform at The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx, where Adderley's agent had heard her. In 1960, he enlisted her to Capitol Records, and that same year she issued her debut single. Guess who I saw today. Capitol Records issued five Nancy Wilson albums over a two-year period. Adderley helped her move away from R&B to music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley and their 1962 collaboration helped her reach the top. She had her breakthrough hit Tell Me the Truth by 1963. It was this performance that brought her to the stage at New York Coconut Grove in 1963, America's most popular nightclub.
