Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson who was an ironworker from Chillicothe on February 20, 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as housekeeper. Nancy was the youngest of six children. Nancy was extremely influenced when she was a young girl by the music that her father played and loved at home. As a young girl she was already able to establish the impression of who she was as well as the things she wanted to be. The choir at church helped develop her talent. The show was on television when she 15 and began being a regular on the tv series Skyline Melodies while still in high school. It was at that time that she began to work in night clubs around the same age. Nancy dropped out of Central State University in Ohio after she matriculated for an entire year. In 1956 she released her debut album in Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. They performed together throughout 1956 until 1958. In the band, Nancy released her first record on Dot Records. Cannonball Adderley urged her to go to New York in order to advance her career. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in 1959. In just a few months, she was offered a job singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road in The Bronx which was where her agent was introduced to her, and she was signed. It was a contract by Capitol Records in 1960. In 1960, she released her first single. Guess whom I saw today. Capitol Records issued five Nancy Wilson albums over a period of two years. She initially focused on blues and rhythm under the influence of Adderley, she shifted away from R&B as she embraced the torch and jazz genres. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley formed a band in 1962. This allowed her to climb the charts. By 1963 she achieved the biggest success by releasing Tell Me the Truth. The following year the release, she was being booked at the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
